I don’t pop into Mark’s & Spencer to do my weekly shop but I do buy a lot of their seafood and salads. Whilst popping in at my local for my usual, I spotted their spreads collection had been updated. New flavours? Oooh, I thought to myself, immediately adding them to my basket. After all who was it that said “A life is considered lived if you have experienced all that it has to offer”? Oh that’s right, me!
I decided to pick their Sparkling Peach, Prosecco and Marc de Champagne flavour as well as their Strawberry & Marc de Champagne one. With flavours like that and a price tag of about £2.50, I felt that the conserves had a lot to live up to !
The taste test begins
I also purchased their French Boule bread as it seemed like the perfect combination. After all, conserves like these deserve a bit more than sliced bread, don’t you think? I started out with the Peach Champagne one as I was entranced by its glittery-gold appearance.
Conserve has small pieces of fruit mixed with the actual jam and as you can see above, the jar didn’t disappoint in that respect. It was fairly easy to spread and looked glorious on the sliced bread. I couldn’t wait to tuck in.
Ah, the flavour. As the conserve hits your tastebuds, the first taste you get is the Prosecco and Champagne. The glitter, if that’s what it is because the tag doesn’t mention it) brightens up the spreader conserve and er….. thats it.
but that’s quickly overshadowed by the sweetness of the conserve itself which in a way is a shame as I expected it to taste more alcoholic. Not sure why, I mean, it’s not exactly right to have alcohol first thing in the morning, is it? So I’m of the opinion that the balance between the alcohol and the sweetness is right.
The Good and Bad
Up next was the Strawberry jar and to be quite honest, it failed the ‘exquisite’ test. Okay, the strawberry flavour was definitely different but not different enough that I’d want to spend £2.50 on it again. For that I would just but a normal jam or conserve jar. The other bad thing was the amount of strawberries; I stirred through the jar and only found one strawberry and that’s the one you see in the picture above. How crazy is that?!
Would I buy them again?
Erm, that would be a no. I wouldn’t say no if I got the Peach and Prosecco one but even then I’d be thinking ‘give me the money instead!’. There are lots of purchases to spend your money on but these jars are not one of those.
Have you had the conserves before? What did you think of them?
