Yup, you read right! Last Sunday, Daddy and I decided to join a Facebook action group that does volunteer community service where we live. All the members of this Facebook action group were previously members of another Facebook traffic group but became disillusioned with it when the traffic group became very negative due to the local Council’s actions within our community. The negativity became so bad to the point of bitterness and they would call Council employees names. They only ever moaned and never saw the good in anything and for optimistic people like myself and Daddy, it became too much. When a new group was created and spoke of activities we could do to help the community, we got stuck in.
Our first community activity was to clear up abandoned rubbish around a local green and a street popular with both pedestrians and different modes of transport. Altogether, there were about eight of us and we were all assigned a rubbish picker-upper and a black bin bag.
It’s not exactly how most people plan to spend their Sunday but it suited us just fine; we were together and took Alexandra with us as the other boys felt they had more sense! We also got to know these Facebook ‘friends’ that we interacted with online and they were actually very friendly and funny in real life too.
We are currently planning on clearing up rubbish around another area and lots more people are willing to join us. Hopefully it will grow into something bigger and more activities will be undertaken.
What do you do to help your community?
